Ukrainian Olena Tykha, fleeing from Irpen, lost her newborn daughter and husband under enemy fire. In a semi-conscious state, she travels on a crowded train to Western Ukraine together with an evacuated orphanage. Someone left a few-month-old baby in the carriage with the orphans. Not realizing her act until the end, Olena gets off at the Lviv train station, hiding under her jacket someone else's child. She crosses the Polish border, passing the child off as her own, uses the documents of her dead daughter. She hides in refugee centers, and then in the family of a Polish doctor, so as not to be exposed. Olena wants to start a new life in a foreign country, but the guilt of what she has done haunts her. Therefore, the woman starts searching for the girl's mother and eventually finds her. Olena meets a war-ravaged, half-crazed young woman who repents for what she has done. The main character faces a difficult moral choice: give or keep the child?
